15 Jan 2013 - RIP Norm "Von Baron" Briddock Life Member GSCMC Melbourne. Free from pain, at home at last. Gone But Not Forgotten.
I am lost for the right words in the midst of tears. My old friend, great supporter and ministry companion in God’s Squad’s most testing days, “Norton” Norm Briddock, later called von Baron, has ascended to his Lord. For Marjorie, who was with him at his unexpected departure, our hearts are filled with love and prayer that she will feel the presence of the one who is given “to comfort those who mourn.

Norm has a profoundly significant place in our mission story. As an ambulance officer he seemed a most appropriate early member of our fledgling club. His passionate oratory, his remarkable memory for everything laughable, and his sharpness of mind and perception were a profound gift to our ministry within the biker scene but far beyond in mission on the road. The first ten years together were remarkable. Then came a tragic division that left only half a dozen determined but shattered members. Norm was needed as never before.

Without Norm’s return from intended retirement to help rebuild, I believe I could not have maintained the small team left after the division which had occurred. God’s unrelenting call, Norm’s return and the loyalty of a small team maintained the vision.
He was for many years my closest confidant and friend. And in recent times one of the most enriching experiences has been to come close to him again. As well as Glena & I, Eddy Pye also felt a great urgency to have Norm and Marjorie with us at the 40th God’s Squad Anniversary. Little did we know the significance of his vintage presentation on Saturday night - that this would be his last challenging proclamation to the ministry he served so strenuously in his healthier years.

Although we know he is “Safe in the arms of Jesus”, he will be sorely missed by many of us, especially Marjorie who has been in recent years a tireless, loving, attentive & sweet wife and carer during increasingly debilitating time for Norm. As a father & grandfather, he leaves behind a beautiful family who will be stricken by his departure ... to Marjorie & all family and friends we in God’s Squad send our tearful love & care, praying that the presence of the Lord’s healing Spirit will sustain you with precious memories of his extraordinary, gifted, passionate, and creative life.

Through many tears during morning devotions after receiving the news of his departure we (Brouss Chambers, another long term mate & ex-Squad member is staying with us) read our daily devotional readings, including Psalm 11 “I’ve already run for dear life straight to the arms of God.” It is Psalm of comfort in difficult times such as today. Norm had a magnificent voice with which he often blessed us in Jesus Movement days. While blues seemed his best shot I think I hear him singing back to us from Glory, an old gospel song:

Some glad morning when this life is o'er, I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away (I'll fly away).
When the shadows of this life have gone, I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I'll fly away (I'll fly away)
Just a few more weary days and then, I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end, I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

Some day we will fly with you Norm. What singing, laughter & fellowship we shall then know. In the mean time we will remain faithful to your legacy and your Jesus.
